Can You Wear a Bikini in Dubai? A Real Dress Code Guide for Women

Affiliate disclosure

If you’re planning a trip to Dubai, chances are you’ve already asked yourself one thing: Can I wear a bikini there? It’s one of the most common questions women ask before visiting.

I’ve been going to Dubai since 2011, and I’ve seen how confusing the dress code can feel when you read mixed advice online. Some people say Dubai is very strict, others say anything goes. The truth sits somewhere in between.

In this guide, I’ll explain exactly where bikinis are fine, where you need to cover up, and what to wear in places like malls, nightclubs, the desert, and mosques, based on what I’ve seen and worn myself over the years.

Can You Wear a Bikini in Dubai?

Yes, you can wear a bikini in Dubai, but only in the right places.

Dubai is the most relaxed Emirate in the UAE, and swimwear is completely normal at beaches, hotel pools, and waterparks. Tourists wear bikinis every day, and no one pays much attention to it.

At the same time, Dubai is still part of a Muslim country, so swimwear doesn’t belong everywhere. Knowing where it’s acceptable makes your trip easier and avoids awkward moments.

Where You Can Wear a Bikini in Dubai

You can wear a bikini or a one-piece swimsuit at:

On my recent trips, I’ve seen all styles of swimwear at public beaches, including thong bikinis. At places like JBR, it’s very normal, and no one really cares.

Helpful tip: If you’re going to a waterpark, choose a swimsuit that feels secure. Some rides are fast, and the last thing you want is to worry about your swimwear mid-slide.

Where You Should Not Wear a Bikini

Even if you’re staying at a beach hotel, you’ll need to cover up once you leave the pool or beach area.

You should not walk around in a bikini or swimsuit in:

  • Hotel lobbies and lifts
  • Restaurants and cafés
  • Shopping malls
  • Streets and public transport

Many malls clearly display signs asking people not to wear swimwear, very short shorts, or crop tops inside. A light dress, skirt, or shorts and a T-shirt are fine.

Is Topless Sunbathing Allowed in Dubai?

No, it isn’t.

Topless sunbathing is not allowed anywhere in Dubai, including hotel pools and beaches. It can lead to fines or more serious trouble, so don’t do it.

What to Wear in Dubai Nightclubs

Dubai nightlife is glamorous, and most clubs expect people to dress up a bit.

For women, short dresses, skirts, and heels are very common. When I first went to a nightclub in Dubai, I wore a knee-length dress and quickly realised most women were dressed much more boldly.

For men, smart casual works best. Beachwear, flip-flops, ripped jeans, or sports shoes usually won’t get you in.

What to Wear in Malls, Souks, and Public Areas

Dubai is generally relaxed, but public places still call for a bit of awareness.

You’ll be fine wearing:

  • Shorts and sleeveless tops outdoors
  • Summer dresses and skirts
  • Jeans and T-shirts
  • Sandals

What’s better to avoid indoors:

  • Very short shorts or skirts
  • Crop tops
  • See-through clothing

One thing I’ve learned the hard way: air conditioning in all indoor places is strong. I always carry a light cardigan or scarf, even in summer.

If you’re visiting traditional areas like the souks in Old Dubai, it is better to dress a bit more modestly. Skirts below the knee and covered shoulders work well.

During Ramadan, it’s also a good idea to dress more conservatively in public areas as a sign of respect.

What to Wear on a Desert Safari

For desert safaris, I always focus on comfort.

I usually wear:

  • Light, breathable clothes like cotton or linen
  • Trainers or flip-flops
  • A light jacket or sweater in the evening, in winter

Very short clothing doesn’t really work in the desert, especially if you plan to sandboard or do quad biking. I’ve found that loose, practical clothes are much easier.

What to Wear When Visiting a Mosque

Mosques have a clear dress code, and it’s taken seriously.

For women:

  • Long skirt or loose trousers (ankle length)
  • Long-sleeved top
  • A scarf to cover your hair

For men:

  • Long trousers
  • Shirt with sleeves

Some mosques no longer lend abayas or scarves, so it’s best to bring your own.
